Most children love playing with doll houses, so imagine one little girl's surprise when her mum created a miniature version of her own home.

That's what happened when Brisbane mum Rachel Fawkes hacked the $49 Aldi doll house with a makeover, replicating every detail of the house down to the colour of the front door.

The product and interior stylist modernised the house with a minimalist white palette and co-ordinated furniture.

"I loved the shape and design of the dollhouse but I thought it could look a lot better with a coat of paint to make it flow and feel like it's a part of our home," she explained.

The inspiration for the revamp came from her own home, which Rachel regularly features on her popular Instagram account.

"Isn't it every little girls dream to have a miniature replica of their own home to play with? I know that was my dream as a little one, and maybe that's why I take such pride in styling my own house today," Rachel said.

Products used

The mother of one used Rust-Oleum Spray Paint in Chalked Blush Pink for the door, Chalked Aged Grey for the top of the roof and feature wall and the Flat White Primer for the remainder of the house.

Rachel also painted each individual piece of furniture, which she bought from Kmart.

Rachel's top tips

  • "The doll house comes disassembled, so paint all of the pieces first before assembling."
  • "You need a lot of patience, allowing each piece to dry before adding another coat of paint."
  • "I needed two coats on most pieces but some needed three."

Success

"Harlow absolutely loves it and loves that it is a mini version of our own house," Rachel said.

The hack caused a stir on social media, attracting 1,150 likes on Instagram.

"Wow! What a difference! Love it," one follower commented.

"This is genius! The original colour put me off and I didn't think of this!!!" added another.

"The reaction has overall been very positive. Of course there's always a few negative Nellys in the mix but I like to focus on the positives," Rachel said.
